Forces and Shape Flashcards
Force is ___
A vector quantity applied to all objects, and it is measured in Newtons (N).
Define Force
Push and pull forces that change the speed, direction or shape of the object.
The 7 types of Forces
Reaction Weight (gravitational) Upthrust Friction Drag Magnetic Electrostatic
The object will not change if the forces ___
Are balanced or no force is acting on the object.
Force that opposes motion in a gas or liquid
Friction
Use of Friction
It is essential in some situations but otherwise wastes energy and causes wear.
Force on springs and wires
Change length when a force acts on them and return to their original length afterwards.
Hooke’s Law
The extension of a spring is proportional to the force applied.
Elastic Limit
When a spring is stretched too much and does not continue to follow Hooke’s Law. Once reached, the shape changes permanently.
Rubber bands
Do not obey Hooke’s law. The extension is not directly proportional to the load.
