Forces and motion (topic 1) Flashcards
Acceleration
rate of change in velocity
Balanced forces
resultant force of zero
Braking distance
distance a vehicle travels under the braking force.
Contact force
force that acts on an object through physical contact
Distance - time graphs
plot of how an objects distance changes over time
Distance
measure of how far an object moves. its a scalar quantity
Distortion
changing of an objects size or shape asa result of a deforming force
Elastic deformation
non - permanent deformation for which the object will return to its original shape when deforming forces are removed
Elastic limit
force beyond which an object will no longer deform elastically and will deform plastically
Equilibrium
object is in equilibrium if the resultant force and resultant moment are equal to zero
Friction
resistive contact force that acts to oppose the relative motion between 2 surfaces
Hookes law
extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force being applied to it
Human reaction time
time it takes for the brain to react to a stimulus
Limit of proportionality
point beyond which the extension of an elastic object is no longer directly proportional to the force applied to it
Linear relationship
relationship between 2 variables where if one variable increases so does the other by the same factor. they produce a straight line when plotted
