Forces and Motion Flashcards
To study for exams
What is a force metre?
A force metre measures Newtons. 1 KG = 10N
What is Newtons First Law?
(Inertia) An object at rest stays at rest, an object in motion remains in motion.
What is Newtons Second Law?
Force = Mass x Acceleration (F=MxA) - Triangle Method. Force = N Mass = Kg's Acceleration = M/S2
What is Newtons Third Law?
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
What is friction?
Friction is a force that opposes motion and happens when two surfaces are in contact.
What effects friction?
- The surfaces that are in contact (rough).
- How hard the surfaces are pushed together.
When is friction good?
- Helps us stand
- Brakes (car tires, bikes etc)
When is friction bad?
- In sports like Ice skating and curling
- Produces heat (car engines)
What is gravity?
Gravity is a non-contact force that acts on all objects.
What is mass? What is it measured in?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Mass is measured in Kg’s (Kilograms).
What is weight? What is it measured in?
Weight is the name of the pulling force of gravity on an object. Weight is measured in Newtons and can change depending on gravity.
How do you calculate Weight?
Force (weight) = mass x gravity. Gravity on earth is 10 m/s-1 Weight (force) = N Mass = Kg's Gravity = N/Kg
What is a first class lever?
Order: FEP (Fap) Examples: - Scissors - Sea Saw - Catapult
What is a second class lever?
Order: SPL (St Paul Logan) Examples: - Wheelbarrow - Stapler - Nutcracker
What is a third class lever?
Order: TPE (Toilet Paper Extreme) Examples: - Cricket - Shovel - Golf
