Forces and Motion Flashcards
Upthrust
upwards force on a body due to displacement of water around it. sometimes called bouyancy
Lift
upwards force on an aeroplane
Weight
force due to gravitational attraction
Friction
force created my particles rubbing of surfaces that opposes motion
air/water resistance
frictional force caused by particles colliding with the body that opposes motian
magnetic
force caused by magnetic attraction
Electrostatic
force caused by attraction between charges
reaction
forces created by a body as a reaction to a force being applied
compression
Force on a body when it is being squashed
Tension
force on a body when it is being stretched
non-contact
if two objects or materials dont need to be touching for a force to have an effect
contact
if two objects or materials need to be touching for an force to have an effect
what are the two types of friction
static friction and dynamic friction
what is static friction
force to prevent an object from starting to move
what is dynamic friction
force that acts when something has started moving
equation for average speed
average speed = total distance divided by total time
equation for acceleration
acceleration = change in velocity divided by change in time
equation to find the force
force - mass times acceleration
equation for weight
mass times gravitational field strength
what is weight
weight is the force that pulls all objects to the centre of the planet, it depends on the mass and gravitational field strength of an object.
what would happen to your weight if it went to a place of a different gravitational field strength
it would change
what would happen to your mass if you went to a place of a different gravitational field strength
it would stay the same since the amount of matter hasnt change only the gravitational field strength
when would a falling parachutist reach terminal velocity
when its air resistance and weight are the same
what is a ticker timer
ticker timer is a tape that marks dots to measure speed and it does this by marking dots at at a certain rate to show distance travelled in a certain time
what is the rate of a ticker timer
50 dots per second (1/50s)
what is balanced forces
balanced forces is two forces going in opposite directions that have the same amount of newtons and balance each other out
what is unbalanced forces
unbalanced forces is when forces acting on an object are not equal and have different amount of newtons, it causes an object that doesn’t move to move and an object moving to change speed or direction
what is a resultant force
a resultant force is made when there is forces acting on an object, when it is zero then the object wont change what its doing but when it isn’t zero it will make un unbalanced force
what does stationary look like on a distance time graph
a flat horizontal straight line
what does a constant speed look like on a distance time graph
a tilted straight line
what does an acceleration look like on a distance time graph
a curve - backward c
what does deceleration look like on a distance time graph
a curve - forward c
what does a constant acceleration look like on a velocity time graph
a straight diagonal line
what does constant speed look like on a velocity time graph
a flat straight horizontal line
what does an acceleration look like on a velocity time graph
a curve
what does a deceleration look like on a velocity time graph
a curve
what type of graph does terminal velocity occur
velocity time graph
how do you find the total distance travelled from a velocity time graph
you calculate the area below the line
what forces occur on a hanging object
tension and weight
what forces occur on a moving floating object (on water)
up thrust and weight (vertical), thrust and water resitance (horizontal)
what forces occur on a stationary object: block on a table
weight and reaction
what forces occur on a moving car at constant speed
friction and thrust are equal lengths (horizontal), reaction and weight
what forces occur on a car accelerating
friction smaller than thrust, reaction and weight
what forces occur on a rifle shooting with a kick back
thrust bigger than reaction
what forces occur with a rocket taking off
lift bigger than reaction
what forces occur at a parachutist at terminal velocity
air resistance and weight are equal
what forces occur for a parachutist accelerating
weight bigger than air resistance
how many metres are in a mile
1600
thrust
forwards force created by a body
