Forces and Motion Flashcards
2 types of forces
Contact and non contact
Contact forces (4)
- Frictional force
- Tension
- Air resistance
- Normal force
Non-contact forces
- Magnetic force
- Gravitational force (weight)
- Electrostatic force
Effects of forces (4)
- Body at rest moves
- Moving body increases in speed
- Moving body decreases in speed
- Moving body changes direction
The 2 force formulas
W = mg
F = ma
Acceleration of free fall near/on earth
9.8m/s²
Definition of friction
Contact force that acts to oppose sliding motion between surfaces
Direction of friction
Parallel to surface and opposite the direction of sliding
Definition of normal contact force
The contact force exerted by a surface on an object
Direction of normal contact force
Perpendicular to and away from the surface
Definition of spring force
A restoring force, the push or pull a spring exerts on an object
Direction of spring force
Opposite the displacement of the object at the end of the spring
Definition of tension
The pull exerted by a spring, rope or cable when attached to a body and pulled taut
Direction of tension
Away from the object and parallel to the string rope or cable at the point of attachment
Definition of thrust/driving force
A general term for the forces rhat move objects such as rockets, planes, cars and people
