Forces and Motion Flashcards
What is a force
A force is a push or pull on a body
What do all forces have
All forces have both size and direction
What is force measured in
What is force measured with
Force is measured in newtons
It is measured with a forcemeter or a newtonmeter
Types of forces
Air Resistance
Lift Force
Spring/Tension
Friction
Gravitational Force
Electrostatic Force
Contact Force
Magnetic Force
Upthrust/Buoyancy
Drag Force
Thrust
What is air resistance
Air resistance is a force that slows down a falling object
What is lift force
A force that acts perpendicular to the motion
What is tension
A force that acts in the opposite direction of the gravitational force
What is friction
A force that makes a moving object slows down and eventually stop
What is gravitational force
A force that causes an object to accelerate when falling to the ground
It is also what keeps you on the ground
What is electrostatic force
A force that repels like charges but attracts unlike charges to eachother
What is contact force
Contact force is any force that occurs when two objects make contact with eachother
What is magnetic force
The attraction or repulsion that arises between electrically charged particles
What is thrust
Thrust is a force that makes an aircraft move in the direction of its motion
What is drag force
A force that prevents objects falling through air from speeding up too quickly
What is water resistance
A force that uses friction to slow down objects moving through water
