forces and motion Flashcards
What’s the difference between a scalar quantity and a vector quantity?
A scalar quantity only has magnitude, a vector quantity has magnitude and directiom
Is speed a vector or scalar quantity?
Scalar
Is velocity a scalar or vector quantity?
Vector
Is distance a scalar or vector quantity?
Scalar
Is displacement a vector or scalar quantity?
Vector
What is the equation for velocity?
sdt velocity = distance/time
What is acceleration?
The rate of change in velocity
What is the equation for acceleration?
acceleration = change in velocity/time
What’s another formula to work out acceleration?
2as = v^2 - u^2
What does s stand for?
Distance
What does v stand for?
Final speed
What does u stand for?
original speed
On a distance time graph which axis is distance on?
Y
Which axis is time on?
X
What does the gradient on a distance time graph show?
The speed of the object
What does a flat line on a distance time graph mean?
The object is stationary
Which axis is velocity on on a velocity time graph?
Y
What does a flat line mean on a velocity time graph?
The object is moving at a constant speed
What does the gradient on a velocity time graph show?
The acceleration/deceleration of an object
How do you work out the distance on a velocity time graph?
The area under the curve
What is Newton’s first law?
A resultant force is required to change the motion of an object
What is Newton’s second law?
If there’s a resultant force acting on an object it will cause it to accelerate in the direction of the force
What is the formula for Newton’s second law?
force = mass x acceleration
What is Newton’s third law?
When two objects interact the forces they exert on each other are equal and opposite (equal magnitude opposite direction)
