forces and motion Flashcards
What is a scalar?
Things that we measure that have a magnitude (size) only are scalars.
What is a vector?
Things that we measure that have both magnitude and direction are vectors.
What are 3 examples of scalars?
Any from time, mass, temperature, speed, direction
What are 3 examples of vectors?
Any from forces (weight), displacement, velocity, acceleration, momentum
How can a vector be represented?
They are represented by arrows.
How could a car be moving at a constant speed but have a changing velocity?
As velocity is a vector if the direction of the car changes the velocity will change, at a constant speed.
How do you measure distance travelled (m)?
Speed (m/s) x time (s)
What equation do you use for calculating speed?
distance travelled ÷ time taken
Is speed a scalar or vector quantity?
Vector
What is the typical speed of a person walking?
1.5 m/s
What is the equation that links speed distance and time?
Speed = distance ÷ time
