Forces and Energy Flashcards
What is a force
A force is a push or a pull
What is the SI unit for force?
Newton (N)
What is friction?
Friction is the force that opposes motion and exists between 2 surfaces in contact
What is elastic force?
It is the force acting on a stretched or compressed elastic object to return to its original shape.
What is tension force?
A tension force is a pulling force applied by an object when it is stretched. It is a contact force that only occurs when an object is stretched.
What is normal force?
The normal force is defined as the force that a surface exerts on an object.
What is the definition of mass?
It is the amount of matter in an object
What is the definition of weight?
It is the gravitational force exerted on an object
What is the formula for weight?
Weight equals mass x gravity
Gravity = 10 (on earth)
Mass must be in kg
What is resultant force?
Resultant force is the overall force after considering all forces acting on a body. Resultant force is also known as net force. There will only be a resultant force when the forces are unbalanced.
What is the relationship between the distance from the pivot and the applied force required?
The greater the distance away from the pivot, the lesser the applied force required.
What is pressure?
Pressure is the force acting perpendicularly per unit area.
What is the formula for pressure?
Pressure = force / area
Force must be in N
Area must be in m^2
When is work done?
Work is only done when an object moves in the direction of the applied force.
What is the SI unit for work done?
Joules (J)
