Forces and braking Flashcards
Define stopping distance of a car
Stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance
Define thinking distance
Thinking distance is how far the car travels during drivers reaction time
Define braking distance
Braking distance is the distance taken to stop under braking force (Once brakes are applied)
What factors affect drivers reaction time ?
If the driver is tired, alcohol, drugs and distractions such as mobile phone in car could also distract the driver
What factors that affect cars braking distance ?
Wet or icy conditions, worn out tyres because reduces friction between tyres and road
What factors that affect cars braking distance ?

Explain the dangers caused by large decelerations
Large decelerations may lead to brakes overheating and/or loss of control.
