Forces and acceleration Flashcards
fWhat is newtons second law in maths?
resultant force = mass X acc.
how do you do an F = ma calculation with vectors?
keep them in vector form and just use two lines of working to establish F, m and a for both horizontal and vertical components
what direction does friction act in reference to force/motion?
always acts against motion or against potential motion
what is Fmax?
limiting frictional force, and if the object is said to be on the point of moving it is said to be in limiting equilibrium
what does Fmax depend on?
size of normal contact force, R and the roughness of the surface; the coefficient of friction for the surfaces in contact
equation linking Fmax and μ (coefficient of friction)?
Fmax = R * μ
μ is t6always between 0 and 1
how do you find friction acting on a body on a slope?
resolve forces into parallel and perpendicullar to slope, resolve the perpendicullar to find R first and then use this value multiplied by μ to give max friction. this can then be equated into the parallel resolution to find the frictional force acting on body as a result of other forces
