✅Forces Acting During Linear Motion Flashcards
What are the types of force?
Internal force
External force
What is an internal force?
Applied when our skeletal muscles contract
What’s an example of an internal force?
The force generated as the quads contract concentrically to extend the knee in a jump.
What is an external force?
Comes from the outside of the body
What are examples of an external force?
Friction
Air resistance
Weight
What is weight and gravity?
Weight is a gravitational force that the earth exerts on a body, pulling it towards the centre of the earth.
The greater the mass of the body, the greater the weight force pulling it downwards
What is friction?
It acts as opposition to motion
What are the types of friction?
Static
Sliding
What can friction be affects by?
The surface characteristics of the two bodies in contact
The temperature of the two surfaces in contact
The mass of the objects that are sliding
What is the surface characteristics of the two bodies in contact?
Think of a 100 metre sprinter who wears running spikes.
These help to increase friction, as the spikes make contact with the track and therefore maximise acceleration.
What is the temperature of the two surfaces in contact?
In curling, for example, the ice is swept in front of the curling stone.
The sweeping action slightly raises the surface temp of the ice, which reduces the friction between the stone and the ice, allowing the stone to travel further.
What is the mass of the objects that are sliding?
A larger mass results in greater friction
What is air resistance?
Opposes the motion of a body travelling through the air
What does air resistance depend on?
The velocity of the moving body
The cross-sectional area of the moving body
The shape and the surface characteristics of a moving body
What is the velocity of the moving body? (AR)
The faster the performer moves, the greater the air resistance
