Forces Flashcards
What is a force?
A push or pull that causes a change in speed, direction or shape.
What are the different types of forces?
Gravity Electromagnetism and Friction.
How can you measure force?
You can measure forces by measuring the stretch, forces are measured with the unit N (Newtons)
What is gravity?
Gravity is a force that exists in all objects and pulls them down together.
Do forces change with speed?
It depends on the force, Air resistance unlike gravity is affected by speed not
Are there forces when objects aren’t moving?
Yes! even when you aren’t moving gravity is a force which pulls you down and keeps you on the ground.
Can we see forces?
No forces are invisible, however we can see their effects.
Can forces change the shape of an object?
Yes, say you drop an apple then it will change the shape in a way once it hits the ground, same for glass and other items.
Why do we only see the effects of gravity with very massive objects such as planets?
Because gravitational forces are stronger the more mass the objects have and the closer they are. Planets also exert a strong gravitational force to objects near them.
Is weight a force?
Yes weight is a force and it depends on gravity.
How strong is the gravitational force for the moon?
The moon is smaller than the earth so it has a weaker gravitational force.
What are frictional forces?
Force that resists one object moving through or over something. An example is air resistance on a car.
What is an upthrust?
Upwards force exerted by a liquid or gas on an object floating in it.
What is a balanced force?
When the total force in opposite directions are equal in magnitude
What happens if a force is unbalanced?
Unbalanced forces can cause an object to change its motion.
Unbalanced forces can also change the speed or direction of an object that is already in motion.
