Forces Flashcards
What is the equation for weight?
weight (N) = mass (kg) x gravitational field strength (N/kg)
W = mg
What is the equation for moment of a force?
moment of a force (Nm) = force (N) x distance (m)
M = Fd
What is the equation for a resultant force?
force (N) = mass (kg) x acceleration (m/s^2)
F = ma
What is Newton’s first law?
It states that an object will remain at rest, or continue to move at a constant velocity unless acted upon by an external force.
What is Newton’s second law?
It states that a resultant force greater than 0 produces/causes acceleration of a (constant) mass
- if the resultant force is doubled, the acceleration will be doubled.
- if the mass is doubled the acceleration will be halved
- F = ma
What is Newton’s third law?
It states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
What is inertia?
An objects reluctance to move or slow down. The heavier the object is, the greater the inertia.
