Forces Flashcards
What are Kinematics ?
The branch of biomechains that describes spatial and temporal components of motion (speed, velocity, acceleration)
What are Kinetics ?
The branch of biomechains that deals with the causes of motion.
What is Velocity ?
Velocity is a measure of how fast a body is moving in a straight line.
What is Speed ?
Speed is different from velocity as speed can be measured for bodies not travelling in a straight line.
Fact Card !
Acceleration with an increase in velocity is known as positive acceleration, with a decrease it is called negative acceleration.
What is a Force ?
A force is any interaction between two objects that can cause an object to accelerate either positively or negatively.
What are Attractive forces ?
Things that are the result of any two masses acting upon each other.
What are Contact forces ?
Things that result from an interaction of two objects, e.g. ground reaction force, friction, fluid resistance.
Fact Card !
The gravitational force acting on a particular object is called its weight and this is clearly dependent on, but not the same as the mass of an object.
- Weight refers to the gravitational force acting on the object
- Mass refers to the amount of matter that makes upt he object
What is Momentum ?
Momentum is the product of a body’s mass and its velocity.
Newton’s Laws of Motion
Law 1 (Law of inertia): The velocity of a body does not change unless a resultant external force acts on it.
Law 2 (Law of acceleration): When a resultant external force acts on a body the rate of change of the body’s momentum is proportional to the force and takes place in the direction of the force.
Law 3 (Law of reaction): In any interaction between two bodies A and B, the force exerted by A on B is equal in magnitude but opposite in direction to the force exerted by B on A.
