Q

What is Displacement ?

A

Displacement indicates distance in a given direction and is found by measuring the straight line that joins the body’s initial and final positions.

Q

Acceleration (Fact Card!)

A

In many sports the ability to increase or to decrease velocity rapidly is more important than the maximum velocity.

The acceleration of an object is defined as the rate of change of velocity with respect to time.

Q

Angular distance and displacement (Fact Card!)

A

Angular distance and displacement describe the angular change of position of a body.

  • Angular distance is the length of the angular path that a body follows during angular motion.
  • Angular displacement is found by measuring the angle between a body’s initial and final position.

Q

Linear and Angular Motion Relationship (Fact Card!)

A

In human movement the result of the movement is linear, while the motions of the segments constituting the movement are angular

  • Linear and angular motion is linked by a mathematical relationship
  • In the hammer, and other sporting activities involving rotation, angular velocity is converted to linear velocity at the point of release.

The conversion rate is determined by the radius of rotation.

Q

Radius of Rotation (Fact Card!)

A

The radius of rotation is the distance from the pivot point to the centre of mass of the object

  • The longer the radius of rotation, the faster the object will travel once released.
  • For example, a discus will travel further if the arms of the thrower are extended as far as possible. Tennis players try to extend themselves as much as possible at serves.
