Forces Flashcards
Force
A push or pull one body exerts on another
Newton’s First Law
An object moving at a constant velocity stays moving at that velocity. An object at rest stays at rest unless acted upon by a force.
Inertia
The tendency of an object to resist any change in motion
Net Force
A combination of all forces that act upon an object
Gravity
Every object exerts a force on every other object. This force is gravity. It is a pull.
Mass
The amount of matter, or “stuff” an object has. It is measured in kilograms.
Weight
The measure of a force of gravity on your mass; how hard an object is pulled toward the center of the Earth.
Newton’s Second Law of Motion
The net force acting on an object causes the object to accelerate in relation to the size of the force and the mass of the object.
Friction
A force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are touching each other
Static Friction
Friction that resists getting an object moving (this happens when objects aren’t moving)
Kinetic Friction
Sliding Friction, Rolling Friction
Friction that resists keeping an object moving (this happens when an object is moving)
Newton’s Third Law of Motion
To every action there is an equal (in size) and opposite (in direction) reaction force.
Projectile
Anything that is thrown or shot through the air
Cenripetal Force
Force acting toward the center of a curved or circular path
Momentum
Mass on the move! The force required to stop a moving object.
