Forces Flashcards
What is force measured in?
Newtons (N)
What is a force?
Push
Pull
Twist
Turn
How many grams equal a Newton?
100g= 1N
Name types of forces
Weight Air Resistance Upthrust Tension Compression Normal Reaction Thrust Lift Drag (air resistance) Friction Magnetic
Definition of Mass
Mass is an amount of substance. It measures in kilograms.
Definition of Weight
Weight is the force of gravity pulling on mass. It is a force so it is measured in Newtons.
Difference between mass and weight
The mass of always stays the same but the weight changes with gravity.
How do you balance a force?
The two forces acting on the object need to be equal. This is called balance.
What happens if the forces are equal?
The object remains stationary or if it was already moving it will continue at a constant speed.
What do we call two forces that are not equal?
Unbalanced.
What happens to an object that has unbalanced forces?
The object will either accelerate or decelerate.
What different types of forces are there?
Contact Forces- Requires the objects to touch
- Thrust
- Friction/Drag
- Tension
- Compression
- Normal Reaction
Non- Contact Forces- Can operate over a distance
- Magnetism
- Gravity
- Static Electricity
What is the formula for speed?
Speed = distance
________
time
Which direction does Friction act?
The opposite way to the movement of the object.
Does a smooth or rough surface have greater friction?
Rough
