Forces Flashcards
What is a force?
a push or pulling motion
give an example of 2 contact forces?
friction, air resistance, tension, reaction
give an example of 2 non contact forces?
weight, electrostatic, magnetic
what is a scalar quantity
size only, no direction
what is the force that pulls us down to the ground?
weight
what is a vector quantity?
both size and direction
give 4 examples of scalar quantities?
distance, speed, time, mass, temperature, volume, power, energy
give 3 examples of vector quantities?
force, velocity, acceleration, momentum, magnetic field, displacement
what is the key thing to remember when drawing force triangles?
tip to tail
what is the speed of sound?
330m/s
does sound move faster or slower through denser materials?
faster
in a distance time graph, what does the horizontal line show?
stationary
in a distance time graph, what does the steeper line indicate
faster constant speed
what is the force that pulls us up of the ground?
reaction/ drag
what is newtons first law of motion
a body will remain at rest or constant velocity if the forces are balanced. an unbalanced force will make an object accelerate in the direction of the force
what is newtons second law of motion
the acceleration of a body is proportional to the resultant force if they are in the same direction. it is inversely proportional to the mass
what is inertial mass?
a measure of how difficult it is to change the velocity of an object
what is the card on the dynamic trolley called?
interrupt card
what happens to the acceleration of the trolley as the mass increases
decreases
what is newtons third law of motion?
when body A exerts a force in body B, body B exerts an equal and opposite force on Body A
what is resultant force?
a single force that can replace all of the other forces acting on an object
how do you find the centre of mass of an irregular shape?
suspend the object from 2 locations and drop a plumb line and wherever it intersects is the centre
give 3 things that impact thinking distance?
drugs/alcohol, poor visibility, tiredness, distractions, greater speed
give 3 things that impact braking distance?
greater speed, icy roads, wet roads, poor road conditions, worn tires or brakes
