Forces Flashcards
what is a force?
The push or pull on an object with mass causes it to change its velocity
6 possible actions a force can cause?
start movement
stop movement
change the direction of movement
change shape of an object
increase speed
decrease speed
Unit used to measure a force
Newton (N)
contact forces
friction, tension, and air resistance.
non-contact forces
gravity, magnetism, and electric forces.
balanced forces
those that are equal in magnitude but opposite in direction
unbalanced forces
forces that are not equal in magnitude and may or may not act in the same direction
what is friction?
the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.
types of friction
static friction
sliding friction
rolling friction
fluid friction
what is streamlining
to shape something so that it can move as effectively and quickly as possible through a liquid or gas
air resistance
the force acting on an object that is moving through air flowing in the opposite direction
what is water resistance
a type of force that uses friction to slow things down that are moving through water
advantages of friction
friction provides a resistive force to the motion of objects. Without it, nothing around us can stay in place
disadvantages of friction
it always resists the motion, so extra energy is required to overcome it.
how to reduce friction
-Make the surfaces little more smoother
-Make objects more streamline
what is gravity?
an invisible force that pulls objects toward the earth’s core
where does gravity come from?
gravity is caused by the Earth spinning
does gravity act on everything the same
Gravity does not attract all objects with the same speed but rather with the same acceleration
where is gravity different and the effect of gravity on different planets?
planets that are puffy and less dense have less gravity at their cloud-tops or surfaces
what is magnetism
he force exerted by magnets when they attract or repel each other
what poles will attract / repel each other
two like poles together (north to north or south to south), they will repel each other.
what is electrostatic force
the attractive or repulsive force between two electrically charged objects
what charges will attract / repel each other
If the charges on both objects are positive, both objects will repel
