What is a moment?
the turning effect of a force
What is the equation for moments?
M=Fd
d is the perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force to the pivot
When will an object be balanced?
if the sum of all clockwise moments acting on it is equal to the sum of all anticlockwise moments acting on it
What do levers do?
increase the distance from the pivot, so less force is needed to get the same moment
(force multipliers)
What do gears do?
transmit the rotational effect of a force from one place to another or change the moment of a force by using a larger or smaller gear
What is a fluid?
a liquid or gas
Where does force due to pressure act?
normal (at right angles to) a surface
What is the equation for pressure?
p=F/A
What is the unit for pressure?
Pascals, Pa
