forces Flashcards
what is a force?
a push or pull on an object due to an interaction with another object
what is a vector quantity?
a quantity with both direction and magnitude
what is a scalar quantity?
a quantity which only has magnitude
what does it mean for an object to be in equilibrium?
it has no resultant force
compare inelastic and elastic deformation
elastic- object returns to original shape
inelastic- object doesnt return to original shape
what is the spring constant?
a measure of how much force would be requried to stretch or compress an object by 1m
what is the resultant force?
the overall force acting upon an object
what is the rule for drawning scale diagrams?
tip to tail on the arrows
what does it mean when an object has been deformed?
it has changed shape
what is extension?
the increase in length of a spring when it has been stretched
what is hookes law?
the extension of a spring is proportional to the force upon it
only works until the elastic limit
What is the minimum number of forces required to stretch, compress, or bend an object?
2
what is the elastic limit?
the maximum extension of an object before it will deform inelastically
what is a moment?
the rotational or turning effect of a force
in terms of moments, what is distance measured in?
metres
e.g 20cm from pivot = 0.2m
what is the unit for moments?
Nm
what is the role of levers?
to transmit the turning effect of a force
small input force= large output force as output is closer to pivot
what is the role of gears?
to transmit turning effects
what is pressure?
the force per unit of area
what unit is pressure meaured in?
Pa, not kPa (need to convert)
what is upthrust?
when a resultant force is upwards
why would an object sink?
if it more dense than the liquid it is in
what happens to atmospheric pressure the further from earths surface you go?
it decreases as they weight of above gas particles decreases
what is acceleration?
the rate of change in velocity
