Forces Flashcards
What is a force?
A force is a push or pull
What is required to change the motion of an object?
A force is required to change the motion of an object
Examples that demonstrate the action of a force
Stop, start, speed up, slow down
What are forces measured in?
Forces are measured in Newtons
What’s a contact force?
A force that can change the motion of an object through touching it. E.G Push and Pull, Friction
What’s a non-contact force?
A force that changes the motion of an object without touching it. E.G magnetic, gravity
Definition of gravitational fields.
A force field that exists around every mass or masses’.
Definition of magnetic fields.
Area around magnet that has magnetic force
What is a mass?
How much stuff is in it
Measures in KG
Measured with mass balance
equal in space and earth
Not dependent of gravitational field.
What is weight?
How heavy it is
Measured in N
Measured with spring balance
Less in space than earth
Dependent of Gravitational field
When is friction undesirable?
Sole of shoes wears out
Ice skating
Mechanical parts get hot and wear out
When is friction desirable?
To brake car at lights
Driving on road
Lighting match on box
Experiment that measured size of frictional force
When we pushed wooden blocks across different surfaces
Independent Variable
The variable that is altered
Dependent Variable
Tested or meaured
