Forces Flashcards
What is a Force
A push/pull on an object caused by it interacting with another object. Forces can make things change its speed, direction or shape.
Name all Contact Forces
Friction Air Resistance/Drag Tension Normal Contact Upthrust Thrust Drive Lift
Name all Non-Contact Forces
Magnetic
Gravitational
Electrostatic
How do you draw a stationary object on a free body diagram
All lines protruding from the object must be of equal length
How do you draw an object travelling at a constant speed on a free body diagram
All lines protruding from the object must be of equal length
How do you draw an object accelerating on a free body diagram
The direction of which the object is accelerating in must be longer than the arrow in the opposite direction.
What must you remember when drawing free body diagrams
The arrows must drawn with a ruler, labelled and touching the edge of the object which must be drawn as a circle or box
What is Weight
The force acting on an object due to gravity
What is the Gravitational Field Strength of Earth
9.8N/kg
What does Hooke’s Law State
The extension of an elastic object is directly proportional to the force applied until the Limit of Proportionality where this law does not apply anymore
What is the difference between elastic and inelastic deformation
Elastic deformation is when an object can return to its original shape and length after deformation which an inelastically deformed object cannot do
What is Spring Constant
Stiffness of a spring (higher it is the stiffer the spring is)
What is meant by saying something is directly proportional to something else
When a graph of one variable compared to another is draw, there should be a straight line through the origin
