Forces Flashcards
What is a force?
A push, pull or twist.
What is Newtons First Law?
Law of inertia (An object will not change its state of motion unless an external force acts upon it.)
What is Newtons Second Law?
F = ma (Force equals the mass of an object and its acceleration)
What is Newtons Third Law?
Action Reaction (For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, forces act in pairs.)
What is mass compared to weight?
Mass is in Kg, Weight is a force where mass is affected by gravity’s accelleration (F = ma).
Whats a reaction force?
A force that acts in the opposite direction of an applied force.
What is a friction force and a tension force?
Friction is when objects rub together, friction opposes motion. Tension is when objects are pulled or stretched, if the applied force is past what the tension force can resist, it will snap.
What is equilibrium in relation to forces?
Equilibrium is when all forces are cancelled out and the object has a net force of 0 (stationary or at a constant velocity)
What is the difference between a net force of ><0 and balanced forces in terms of acceleration?
If there is a net force acting on the object, it is accelerating in that direction. Balanced forces have 0 net force meaning they are stationary or travelling at a constant velocity.
What is F = ma?
Force = mass x acceleration.
if an object is on a slope with 3 force vectors, which forces create a 90 degree angle? (weight, friction and support)
Support and Friction force create a 90 degree angle.
