Force and motion Flashcards
Force
a push or a pull on a object
motion
the change in a objects position
magnet
a material that has the ability to attract or repel other magnetic material
Friction
The force that slows down objects when they rub against each other
Gravity
The force that pulls objects towards each other
Mass
The amount of matter (“stuff”) in an object
Weight
The amount of Force that gravity has on an object’s Mass
Newton’s first law of motion
An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion with the same speed and direction unless acted on by an unbalanced force
Newton’s second law of motion
The acceleration of an object depends on its mass and its Force used to move it
Newton’s third law of motion
For every action there’s an equal but opposite reaction
Acceleration
The rate at which an object changes speed and direction
Speed
The distance and object travels in one unit of time
Velocity
The speed and direction of a moving object
Inertia
An object’s tendency to resist a change in motion
