force Flashcards
What is the formula for Net Force?
Fnet = EF (sum of all forces)
EF represents the total of all forces acting on an object.
Is a book resting on your lap moving with respect to you?
No
The book is at rest relative to you.
Is the book moving with respect to a person standing on the roadside?
Yes
The book moves at the same speed as the bus relative to the person.
What distinguishes scalar quantities from vector quantities?
Scalar quantities only have magnitude, while vector quantities have both magnitude and direction
Examples: Scalar - Temperature, Distance, Speed, Mass, Energy; Vector - Displacement, Velocity, Acceleration, Force.
What is the difference between distance and displacement?
Distance is the total length of the path traveled, while displacement is the change in position including direction
Example: Driving 5 miles east and 3 miles west results in 8 miles distance and 2 miles displacement.
Define gravity.
A force of attraction that exists between any two masses, directed toward the center of the Earth
Commonly referred to as ‘Down’.
What is weight?
The force of gravity acting on an object (downward)
Weight is dependent on the mass of the object and the acceleration due to gravity.
How is motion defined?
Change of position or orientation of a body with respect to the frame of reference
Motion can be described in terms of speed, velocity, and acceleration.
What is a frame of reference?
A set of coordinates used for comparison
It helps to determine motion relative to a specific point or object.
What is the formula for displacement?
AX = Xf - Xi
AX represents the change in position, where Xf is the final position and Xi is the initial position.
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Speed is how fast an object moves, while velocity is speed with direction
Velocity provides more information about the object’s movement than speed alone.
Fill in the blank: Distance is the total length of the path traveled, while _______ is the change in position.
displacement
