Which pathway travels touch, vibration, and proprioception?
dorsal column-medial lemniscal
Which pathway travels pain and temperature?
spinothalamic tract
Branches of CN VII
Foramen lacerum
Which order neuron projects to the post-central gyrus? (Dorsal column-medial lemniscal system) AND (spinothalamic tract)
third
What does first order neuron do? (Dorsal column-medial lemniscal system) AND (spinothalamic tract)
receive input, send axons to dorsal horn (grey matter of SC), and project into dorsal columns (white matter of SC), enter medulla, synapse another neuron
receives sensory input, send axons to dorsal horn (gray matter of SC), synapse with another cell
What do second order neurons do? (Dorsal column-medial lemniscal system) AND (spinothalamic tract)
crosses to the other side of the medulla, then synapses with another neuron in the thalamus
crosses over in the gray matter, sends its axons up to the brain in the lat. and ant. white matter of the spinal cord, synapses with another neuron in the thalamus.
Main difference in the two major sensory pathways? (Dorsal column-medial lemniscal system) AND (spinothalamic tract)
point of decussation (crossing of nerve fibers) : DCML is at the medulla, ST is shortly after entering the spinal cord
sensory info they are transmitting
DCML = fine touch, proprioception, and vibration,
ST= pain, temperature, and crude touch.
