Foot care Flashcards
What is the tx for athletes foot?
Antifungal for 2 weeks and add a week
What is the tx for onchomycosis?
Use an oral antifungal because topical antifungals take long
We only treat DLSO type
What are calluses?
Localized area of thickened skin
Occur at the weigh-bearing or friction points
It is the skins way of protecting the skin
What are the treatments for calluses (if any)?
footwear or pumice stone (to smoothen out)
What can be done for cracked calluses that the patient doesn’t want to get filed down?
Can use a liquid bandage, skin crack solution (nexcare), or crazy glue
How do callus removers work?
There are two types
Cushion + pliable disks containing 40% salicylic acid (contains felt and rubber disk)
Cushion + liquid salicylic acid 15% (dab are and let it dry, then put a ring over it - ring is only useful if the corn is smaller than the hole)
What is the ball-o-foot cushion for calluses?
Treatment is to work as protective material
What are corns?
Hyper-keratotic growth due to local friction or trauma over a joint
they are smooth and present in patients with hammer toes, where the knuckles rub against the shoe
What is the difference between hard and soft corns?
Hard corns tend to develop on top of the toes - dry
Soft corns develop between the toes - damp and irritated by moisture
What is the treatment for corns?
Remove the cause is the best move
Use a protective material - foam padding
Scholl corn cushions -foam ring with no meds, prevents the foot from rubbing with the top of the shoe
Can also use salicylic acid preps (cushion + pliable disks with 40% SA)
Explain the salicylic acid prep treatment for corns
Soak the hard corns first then add the SA
OD- every 2 days
treatment takes around 6 days
What is the main difference in treatment with SA for dry vs soft corns?
Soft corns will need to be covered after applying the SA to prevent irritation to neighboring toes
What are bunions?
Swelling of the join via deviation of the big toe
Budge with or without curved toe
