Q

talus

A

head (proximal to navicular tubercle)
trochlea (anteriorly halfway between malleoli, more prominent laterally)
medial tubercle (45degree posterior off medial malleolus, slides around the medial malleolus during plantarflexion & dorsiflexion)

Q

hallucis

A

only 2 phalanges
IP joint = hinge joint
1st metacarpophalangeal joint = ellipsoid (allows some abd/adduction & flexion & extension

Q

1st metatarsal

A

short & stalky

proximal end articulates with medial cuneiform (bump on the dorsum of foot - often aggravated by tight lacing of laces)

Q

2nd-5th metatarsals

A

long & slender w/ enlarged base & head
bases - connect w/ tarsals
spaces between metatarsals contain small intrinsic muscles of the foot (easily palpated from dorsal aspect)

Q

tuberosity of 5th metatarsal (base of the 5th)

A

large knob where peroneus brevis attaches

avoid this area when taping

Q

medial, middle, lateral cuneiforms

A

between navicular and metatarsals
medial - attachment site - tibialis anterior & tibialis posterior
middle & lateral are between the medial cuneiform & cuboid (palpated along dorsal surface)
medial - proximal to base of 1st metatarsal, feel drop off
middle & lateral - lateral to medial one

Q

navicular

A

bean shaped
between medial/middle cuneiforms & talus
dorsal & medial surfaces are palpable
superficial tuberosity bulges on medial side of foot - tibialis posterior & spring ligament attaches
should be more proximal than the base of the 5th metatarsal when viewed from dorsum of foot

Q

cuboid

A

cube shaped
surrounded on 3 sides by: 4-5th metatarsals, lateral cuneiform, calcaneus
dorsal surface - partially covered by belly of extensor digitorum brevis
located diagonally between lateral malleolus & base of 5th metatarsal, closer to base of 5th
