Foot Flashcards
Medial malleolus
Distal prominence of the tibia palpated at the medial ankle
Lateral malleolus
Distal prominence of the fibular palpated at the lateral ankle
Talar head
palpated in the depressions just anterior to the medial and lateral malleoli
Calcaneus
palpated at the posterior-most aspect of the ankle by grasping the heel
Medial calcaneal tuberosity
palpated on the plantar aspect of the heel at the medial/distal-most aspect of the heel fat pad
Fibular trochlea
palpated 1 finger width inferior to the lateral malleoli
sustentaculum tali
bony shelf palpated 1 finger inferior to the medial malleoli
Navicular tuberosity
2 to 3 fingers anterior to the sustentaculum tali (SST)
medial cuneiform
2 to 3 fingers anterior to navicular tuberosity, in line with the first metatarsal head
intermediate cuneiform
one finger lateral to navicular tuberosity in line with second metatarsal head
styloid process
distal prominence at the base of the 5th metatarsal palpated along the lateral border
cuboid groove
depression felt just posterior to the styloid process
metatarsal heads and shafts
can be palpated across the dorsal and plantar aspect of the foot by extending and flexing the toes, can be traced proximally across the dorsum of the foot
phalanges (proximal, middle and distal)
individual phalanges can be palpated by flexing the interphalangeal joints. digits have distal, middle and proximal phalanges, hallux only has proximal and distal.
