Multi-cultural foods is the term used to describe foods from cultures from around the world.
for example in Britain we have restaurants serving french, spanish, italian, chinese, indian, thai, american and mexican foods
give three reasons why are multi-cultural foods becoming more popular?
multi-cultural foods are becoming more popular because-
- there are more people with friends from other cultures who try their native foods
- there are more multi-cultural supermarkets and restaurants available
- people are travelling abroad more and are tasting foods from other cultures
- multi-cultural marriages are more common

Traditional British food is often considered bland where multi-cultural food used lots of herbs and spices
multi-cultural food also have cultural/religious rules linked with them

Jewish people eat food that is Kosher, this means prepared and cooked in a certain way
There are many forbidden foods, including pork, rabbit, horse, frogs and shellfish, these, are not kosher.
All kosher meat must be slaughtered in a special way
blood is not kosher either, even a bloodspot in an egg makes that egg non-kosher.
Milk and meat foods are kept completely separate and they are prepared using different equipment

Muslims eat food that is HALAL. This is food that id good according to the Qur’an, food that is pure, clean, wholesome, nourishing, and pleasing to the taste.

customers may have certain conditions that need to be taken into consideration when cooking for them
eg people with a nut allergy may die if they eat nuts or even foods prepared near nuts

people with coeliac disease cannot eat foods which contain gluten
eg flour products like bread and pastry
what does the term VEGAN mean?
A vegan is a person who does not eat any animal products for example eggs, milk and cheese
An ethical vegan is the term often applied to those who not only follow a vegan diet but extend the philosophy into other areas of their lives, and oppose the use of animals for any purpose ie they don’t wear leather or eat honey
what does the term vegetarian mean?
a vegetarian is someone who doesn’t eat meat or meat products
There are varieties of the diet as well: an ovo-vegetarian diet includes eggs but not dairy products, a lacto-vegetarian diet includes dairy products but not eggs, and an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet includes both eggs and dairy products.
what do we mean by the term pescatarian?
Most pescatarians maintain a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet with the addition of fish and shellfish.
what food do diabetics have to be careful with?
they have to be aware of the SUGAR content of foods both added and natural sugars as their body does not have the right levels of insulin to process them
why should we take special precautions about food for the elderly
we need to take care of foods for the elderly because
their taste buds don’t work as well as they used to so delicate flavours may seem bland
they are often less active so their body doesn’t need as much food
They may have trouble swallowing or chewing
