Food Webs/ Chains Flashcards
Define Ecosystem
Term used to describe the relationship among the living organisms and the non living components of an environment
Example - Artificial and natural
Define food chain
Step by step sequence linking organisms that feed on each other to show energy flow
Example - ☀️—>🌿—>🐇—>🐍
Define producers
Occur first on a food chain and have the ability to make their own food; also called autotrophs (self feeders)
Example- 🌷, 🌲 and 🌿
Define consumers
Animals and other living things that feed on producers and on each other; also called heterotrophs (other feeders)
Example - 👪, 🐻, 🐴 and 🐳
Define detritivores
Organisms that feed on the remains of dead organisms and animal waste
Example - worm, millipedes, vulture and sea cucumber
Define decomposers
Organisms that break down organic matter to release nutrients back into the ecosystem
Examples - snails, fungi and bacteria
Define niche
An organisms role in an ecosystem
Define ecology
Study of how organisms interact with each other
Define abiotic factors
Non living factors or influences on organisms
Ex. Wind soil water air and rocks
Define biotic factors
Any factors that are alive or made by life forms
Example : animals, fungi, bacteria, animal waste, dead and alive plants
Define population
All of the members of the same species living in the same area
Define species
Similar organisms that can reproduce with each other to produce fertile offspring
Define community
Collection of all the different populations in an ecosystem or habitat
Define biome
Large geographical regions with characteristic soil, climate and plants
Example forest, Desert, tundra
Define biodiversity
The variety of living organisms found in an ecosystem or habitat
