food web and food chain and ecological pyramids Flashcards
What is a food chain?
A food chain shows the transfer of energy from one organism to the next, starting with a producer
Where does the source of all energy in a food chain come from?
The source of all energy in a food chain is light energy from the Sun
What is a producer
Makes its own food using energy from sunlight during in photosynthesis
What is a primary consumer
Eats the producer- are herbivores
What is a secondary consumer?
Predators that feed on primary consumers- carnivore
What is a Tertiary consumer?
Predators that feed on secondary consumers- carnivore
What is a network of interconnected food chains?
A food web is a network of interconnected food chains
What is independence?
All organisms in an ecosystem depend upon each other. If the population of one organism rises or falls, then this can affect the rest of the ecosystem.
Why is only 10% of the energy transferred to the next level?
some energy is used for metabolic activities and some are lost as heat to the surroundings
How many types of pyramids are present? What are they?
Pyramid of
1-Number
2-Biomass
3-energy
What does a pyramid of numbers show?
A pyramid of numbers showshow many organismswe are talking about at each level of a food chain.
Are the Pyramids of numbers always pyramid-shaped
Pyramids of numbers are not always pyramid-shaped
Are the pyramid of numbers always upright?
No, the pyramid of numbers in a Parasitic Food Chain in Inverted
What does the pyramid of biomass show?
A pyramid of biomass showshow much mass the creatures at each level would have without including all the water that is in the organisms(their ‘dry mass’)
Are the pyramid of biomass always upright?
No, the pyramid of biomass of aquatic ecosystems are inverted
