FOOD WASTE Flashcards
Who contributes to food waste?
Retailors, shops, consumers, manufacturers, distributers and producers.
How do we as consumers waste food?
Cooking too much, portion sizes are too big, picky eaters, not meal planning, eating out.
How muhc waste does WRAP estimate?
12 million tonne
What is food waste in developing countries due too?
Poor transport, storage processing, packaging facilities.
What is food wated in devoped countries due too?
Weather, pests, disease, overproduction.
What are the three types of food waste?
60% - avoidable - platescrappings, leftovers.
20% - potentially unavoidable - breadcrusts, potato skins.
20% - unavoidable - chicken bones, banana skins.
What are some non recyclable common household packaging?
Potato chip bags, pizza boxes, tooth paste tubes.
What are the enviromental issues related to food waste?
Greenhouse gas emissions, water, land.
What are two green house gases and how are they produced?
CO2 - producing, packaging and transporting food.
Methane - organic matter (wasted food) decomposing inanerobic condtitions.
How does methane contibute to GHG?
Traps heat in the atmosphere creates leachate (liquid) contmainates the soil and ground water.
How ar egreenhouse gases released in relation to food production?
On the farm, electricity production, transport, storing an dcooking food, land use changes and deforestation.
Hos is water an enviromental issue in relation to food waste?
Agriculture uses 70% of fresh water, meat products are water intensive and water used for irrigation would be enough for a billio people.
How is land an enviromental issue in relation to food waste?
30% agricultural land is used for producing waste food, signifigant proportions of crops are used to feed livestock rather than people.
What are some ethical issues involved in food waste?
8 million people int he UK struggle to put food on the table while others are throwing out perfectly good food.
1 billion people would be lifted from hunger with only 1/4 of food waste being reduced in europe and north america.
800,000 tonne of plastic is in oceans, taking up to 450 years for decompostition.
What are primary producers reasons for food loss?
Pests and disease, Severe weather, inefficient harvesting, over production.
What are food manufacturers reasons for food waste?
inefficient factory processes, preparation losses, poor storage, contamination damages.
What are retailors reasons for food waste?
Non asthetically pleasing, expiry dates, demand challenges, damaged goods
What are consumers reasons for food waste?
over buying, short expiry dates, limited practical cooking knowledge, poor storage.
