Food tests and nutrients Flashcards
What is a biomolecule?
chemical compound found in living organisms
What are the 4 main types of biomolecules?
Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids
What are polymers and monomers?
Polymers are long chains of molecules of the same type in a pattern. Each individual molecule in a polymer is a monomer
What is synthesis and break down?
Synthesis is building big molecules from small ones and break down is breaking polymers into small molecules
What is the monomer of protein?
Amino acids
What is the polymer of glucose?
Starch
What is the monomer of lipids?
Fatty acids
What is the polymer of nucleotides?
Nucleic acids
What does the Biuret Test detect?
Proteins- Purple for positive Blue for negative
What does Benedict’s Test detect?
Glucose- Red for high amounts, orange for medium, yellow for low, green for trace and blue for none
What does the Ethanol Test detect?
Lipids- Cloudy for positive transparent for negative
What does the Iodine Test detect?
Starch- Orange for negative blue/black for positive
