  • Shake the substance with ethanol until it dissolves
  • Then pour the solution in water
  • If lipids/fats are present, they will precipitate from the solution and form a milky liquid

  • Add potassium hydroxide to the solution to make it alkaline
  • Then add copper sulfate solution
  • If the solution turns blue, protein is not present
  • If the solution turns purple, protein is present

  • Heat it in a water bath that’s set to 75 degrees celcius
  • If sugar is present the sample will form a coloured precipitate
  • The higher the concentration of sugar, the more the colour changes
