Enzymes Flashcards
Enzymes
Proteins that function as biological catalysts
Substrate
The molecule changed in the reaction
Active site
The part of the enzyme where it joins on to its substrate to catalyse the reaction
What does it mean when an enzyme has ‘high specificity’?
It means they only work with one substrate
What is the ‘lock and key model’?
This model describes the way only a specific substrate fits into the enzyme, just like only a specific key fits into a lock
What is denaturing?
When an enzyme gets so hot/affected by the pH level so much that the shape of its active site changes
Optimum temperature
The temperature enzymes work best at
Three main types of enzymes
Amylase, protease and lipase
What does amylase break down? (asm)
It breaks down starch into sugars like maltose
What does protease break down? (ppa)
It breaks down protein into amino acids
What does lipase break down? (llgf)
It breaks down lipids into glycerol and fatty acids
How do you know if iodine is present in solution?
If solution changes from brown-orange to blue-black
Formula to calculate rate of reaction
1000/time (seconds)
