Food Supply And Agriculture Flashcards
What are the three factors of food security?
Quantity
Quality
Access
Describe quality as a factor of food security
Food is sufficiently nutritious
Describe quantity as a factor of food security
Sufficient food is always available
Describe access as a factor of food security
People have the economic means to obtain food
What pressures are there regarding food production?
There is pressure to increase food production in a more sustainable way
What is agricultural production?
Agricultural production depends on factors that control photosynthesis and plant growth.
The land we can use to grow crops is limited
What factors increase yield?
Use of fertiliser
Protection of crops from pests
Reducing competition
What happens as you move along a food chain?
Energy is lost between each trophic level
How much energy is lost and how much energy is passed on between trophic levels in the food chain?
90% is lost
10% is passed on to the next trophic level
What happens as a result of the loss of energy between trophic levels in a food chain?
Livestock production generates far less food per area of land than plant production as shorter food chains have much less loss of energy
Land planted with crops compare to land planted with grass to feed livestock
Land planted with crops produces far more food than the same land planted with the grass to feed livestock
However not all land can be planted with crops and in this case it is more efficient to use them for livestock
