food security test Flashcards
definition of food security and insecurity
food security = food security exists when all people at all times have physical, social and economic access to enough safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs for a healthy lifestyle
food insecurity = food insecurity is the inability to consistently access an adequate amount of food to live active and healthy lifestyle, or have the assured ability to acquire acceptable food in social acceptable ways
components/ pillars of food security
AAUS
Availability = the availability of sufficient quantities of foods of appropriate quality, supplied through domestic production
Access = access by individuals to adequate resources for obtaining foods for a nutritious diet
Utilisation = utilisation of food through adequate diet, clean water, sanitation and health care to reach a state of nutritional well being where all physiological needs are met.
Stability = to be food secure, a population, a household or individual must have access to adequate food at all times. they should have no risk of losing access to adequate food
statistics of food security
almost 3.1 billion people couldnt afford a healthy diet in 2020
between 702-828 million people were affected by hunger in 2021
2.3 billion people in the world were moderately food insecure in 2021 and 11.7% of the global population were severely food insecure
natural disasters and impact on food security
weather events including flooding, drought, cyclones, tsunamis have a significant impact on food insecurity and its usually the worlds poorest populations who are impacted. People lose homes, workplaces, transportation and agriculture. When losing jobs they aren’t able to sustain enough money to have access to reliable food, also when crops and farms are destroyed farmer or producers have to start all over again, with no transport and roads people cant get to places nor can the food that should be supplied for people
poverty and impact on food security
around 1.3 billion people lived in poverty in 2011. the impact poverty has on food insecurity is major as they dont have a job which indicates no income which takes away their purchasing powers to buy nutritional foods. Most people in poverty live in rural or remote areas in which sometime in some circumstances farming is their only employment if they were to get it. Poverty is a cycle which is hard to break
groups most at risk of food security in LDCs and Aus
single parents
poverty/ children in ldcs
strategies to help reduce food insecurity
education, aid
education
enhancing skills and knowledge and understanding of food producers, retailers and consumers to promote food security
producers: sustainable food production skills, live stock and crop management, learning new agriculture techniques
Consumers: knowledge of basic nutrition, safe food prep, purchasing and preparing nutritious and affordable food. Understanding the cycle of food and how to use and consume food in a sustainable way
aid
Government and non government organisations can provide food assistance through school breakfasts, food vouchers, discounted community supermarkets, emergency food relief and food donations. these organisations can reduce barriers to food security
world food bank =
world food programme = The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies, cash in kindness
single parents and food insecurity
A lack of high-paying employment and a missing second income can be major for parents that are single even more if they have children to feed. almost one third of single parent house holds experience food insecurity. this can be due to uprising expenses, paying bills, allowing children to eat. this can have impacts on the adults emotional and mental health due to having to try and maintain a lifestyle that is safe eg, having a house which includes paying bills whilst also trying to consume the right amount of food.
children
good nutrition sets a child on the path to strength and to survive. in 2020, 22% of children under the age of 5 suffered from stunting, which can be caused from undereating or malnutrition 6.7 % of children were underweight in 2020. If children are brought into a family for example that had low income and were food insecure it causes that child to become food insecure and is a continuous cycle because you need the proper food to allow the body to develop
