Food security risk factors Flashcards
List the food security risk factors
Water scarcity
Climate change
Threats from non-native plants and animals
Competition for land
Use of land for fuel instead of food
Armed conflict
Describe Threats from non-native plants and animals
Invasive non native animals and plants which cause threats to natural ecosystems
Effects of non-native plants and animals
Crop loss
Vast amounts of money are spent to control and contain these invaders
Weeds specifically - compete with crops for water, sunlight and nutrients
How does non-native plants and animals occur
Through human activities:
- Seeds carried accidentally on shoes or insects in clothing can travel from place to place across the world in days or hours
- Humans have purposely bought non-native species into an environment to tackle an existing problem with another species.
Define urban sprawl
The process where farmland is taken over for housing and farmers are pushed out to land that may not be suitable for agriculture and food production.
Describe armed conflict
Where armed conflicts occur (such as wars) which affects food availability and accessibility
Effects of armed conflict
Land used for growing crops could be destroyed
Farmers may fight in the war
Supermarkets are closed
Roads are too dangerous to deliver food
