Define Food Security
“When all people at all times have physical, safe, nutritious food to meet dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy lifestyle”
Define Food Insecurity
“Running out of food and not being able to buy more leading to an insufficient, low quality or reliable food intake resulting in hunger”
Access
Physical and economical access to food at all times. A lack of accessibility can be due to poverty, cost of imports, food transport and infastructure.
Availability
Sufficient supply of nutritious and quality food for people to consume at all times but can be affected by production and transport
Utilisation
Utilisation is the sufficient quantity, quality and diversity of foods to meet nutritional needs and the access to foods that are safe and produced in environmentally sustainable ways. This component may be difficult for some countries as fresh fruit and vegetables can be seasonal, a reliance on imbalance diets and nutritional deficiencies.
Stability
Stability is the reliability of food supply, this component can be jeopardised due to the impact of urbanisation, impact of weather and climate, conflict and post-conflict and scarcity of water and arable land.

3.6 million Australians (15%) have experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months. 3 in 5 of these individuals experience food insecurity at least once a month

More than one third of people in the world (2.6 billion) could not afford a healthy diet in 2022
