What is food poverty?
Food poverty - unable to access a sufficient diet. Often due to financial constrictions.
What is food insecurity?
(Gatrell, 2015) When food consumed is of poor quality and nutritionally inadequate
Often presumed to just be a problem in the global south (Dowler et al., 2011) - seen in developed countries too.
Growing problem of food insecurity
(Trussell Trust, 2017) 1.2million users of food banks in 2016/17 (proxy measure of food poverty).
What has food poverty been caused by?
Inflation (cost of food increasing) and financial difficulties (e.g. becoming made unemployed)
What negative effects arise from not having sufficient levels of food have?
Negatively impact health and wellbeing.
Can also cause mental health problems such as stress and anxiety
(Drewnowski 2004).
