16
Q

What is PS plastic used for and can it be recycled?

A

cups and plates, yes it can but not in sask

17
Q

What is Modified atmosphere packaging?

A

Alters the gas composition of product often to keep O2 levels low. In meat oxygen is kept high to keep red colour.

18
Q

What is considered when creating MAP for fruits and vegetables?

A

Reduction of respiration and delayed ripening to increase storage life. Some O2 is needed to prevent negative biochemical changes.

19
Q

What is micro-perforated film used for in product?

A

Controlling O2 intake and CO2 release to create an internal atm different from normal air (grape packaging)

20
Q

What is controlled atm storage?

A

Utilizes low temperature storage in combination with specific concentrations of O2 and CO2. May control ethylene as well.

21
Q

What are smart packages?

A

Oxygen scavenger, temperature sensors, and antimicrobial/antioxidant films.

22
Q

What do microwave susceptors do?

A

Containers provide heating and browning to product.

23
Q

Why are self-venting containers important?

A

They allow one to safely heat frozen vegetables creating more water activity and therefore more response to microwave.
