Food chains, energy, biomass and cycles Flashcards
Pyramid of biomass:
Largest at bottom, gets smaller as it goes up.
Primary consumers
Eat plant material, herbivores.
Secondary consumers
Eat animal material, carnivores.
Decomposers
Feed on dead/decaying organisms.
Decay:
An essential life process that digests our food or waste matter and recycles materials. Microorganisms break down materials from living things. - These microorganisms are called Enzymes.
What are the factors affecting decay?
- Moisture
- Temperature
- Amount of available oxygen
Where is carbon found?
In all living things.
How is CO2 removed from the atmosphere?
Green plants and algae remove CO2 from the atmosphere by photosynthesis.
How is CO2 returned to the atmosphere?
Organisms return CO2 to the atmosphere through respiration.
Passing carbon between organisms:
When an animal eats a plant, carbon goes from the plant into the animal. Microorganisms then feed on waste from animals and waste from dead animals.
