Food chains Flashcards
Food chain
The chain of energy transfer between organisms
Food web
Food webs show the movement of energy and many interactions within an ecosystem.
Herbivore
Only eats plants
Carnivore
only eats meats
Omnivore
eats both plants and meats
producer
an organism that can produce or create their own energy.
consumer
Needs to consume producers or other consumers to create their own energy
Decomposer
Responsible for breaking down dead/ decaying organisms to return nutrients to the ecosystem
Trophic level
The level that organisms is found on a food chain
primary consumer
An organism that eats plants and provides energy for other consumers
secondary consumer
Organisms that eat the primary consumers
Tertiary consumer
Consumers that are at the highest level in the food chain.
Quaternary consumer
Top predators within their ecosystem.
10% rule
The rule that when energy is being transferred through the food chain, only 10% of the energy is transferred
Biomass Pyramid
The total living biomass present at each trophic level
