Climate Change Flashcards
Weather
The state of the atmosphere at a particular place and time
Climate
The long-term pattern of weather conditions in an area, observed over a period of 30 years or more. Climate is classified by its main features, temperature and precipitation.
Earth’s Energy Budget
the balance between the energy earth receives from the sun and the energy it radiates back into space
Solar Radiation
All light measured on a spectrum, different types of light will interact differently with the atmosphere
UV Radiation
Invisible
causes sunburns, skin cancers and eye damage
absorbed in the mesosphere
Infrared Radiation
Felt as heat.
Is absorbed by both the troposphere and Earth’s surface
Visible Light
Colours that can be seen by the human eye
Absorbed and reflected by the Earth’s surface
Reflected light becomes infrared
Albedo Effect
The amount of light a surface reflects
Natural GH Effect
The atmosphere is made up of greenhouse gasses, these gasses absorb solar and infrared radiation. This maintains the Earth’s surface temperature
Solar cycles
The amount of energy the Sun produces over a cycle of around 11 years
