Food Chain & Food Web Flashcards
Organisms that can manufacture their own food. These organisms trap the energy from the sun and convert it to compounds they need to grow.
Producers or Autotrophs
Organisms that obtain their energy needs by eating plants and other animals and cannot make their own food.
Consumers
Organisms that directly feed on the producer
Herbivores
Organisms that eat animals.
Carnivores
Organisms that eat both plants and animals.
Omnivores
An organism, often a bacterium, fungus, or invertebrate feeds on and breaks down dead plant or animal matter, making organic nutrients available to the ecosystem.
Decomposers
It consists of the sequence of organisms that eat other organisms through which energy is transferred.
Food chain
It consists of several interlocking food chains. It is a more complex pattern of energy transfer.
