Food behavior in relation to plant chemistry Flashcards
1
Q
phenylthiocarbamide
A
tastes extremely bitter to some and not to others, determined by a single gene which codes for a taste receptor on your tongue
2
Q
sensory perception
A
The ability to understand and interact with the environment using senses of sight, smell, hearing, taste, touch.
- differs between individuals
3
Q
taste
A
perceive or experience the flavor of, determined by the number of fungi papillae present on the tongue
4
Q
taste bud
A
- each are composed of 50-100 taste cells representing all 5 taste sensations
- each taste cell has receptors on it apical surface
- a single taste cell seems to be restricted to expressing only a single type of receptor (except for bitter receptors)
- taste receptor cells are connected, through an ATP-releasing synapse, to a sensory neuron leading back to the brain
- however, a single sensory neuron can be connected to several taste cells in each of the several different taste buds
5
Q
taste perception
A
occurs in the mouth when a substance reacts chemically with taste receptor cells located on taste buds or papillae. super, average, & non taster.
