What medical advice should be given if a child has a food allergy?
Emergency management of allergic/ anaphylactic reaction
What replacement infant formulas are available if a child has a milk allergy?
- Extensive Hydrolysed formula - chemically heated breakdown of proteins (~5% protein remains - some may still be symptomatic → move onto amino acid formula)
- Amino acid formula - derived from plants, no milk origin. More expensive
- Soya from >6 months on
What is lactose intolerance?
Lack of lactase persistance allele
- Symptoms: bloating, flatulence, explosive diarrhoea
- Often subtle and preogressive over years
- Mostly diagnosed as adolescent/ adult
- Not always symptomatic with milk
What is the role of lactase?
Hydrolysis of lactose → glucose and galactose

How can milk be reintroduced in milk allergy?

What steps can be taken to identify a food thats causing allergy?
Medical history → Physical examination → screening tests → Oral food challenge
